The tagged neutron method is a new technology that allows nondestructive remote monitoring of the elemental composition of a substance and determines concentrations of 25 elements

The operation principle of tagged neutron method (TNM)

    (aka Associated particle imaging)
    irradiate ore with fast neutrons with an energy of 14.1 MeV, which arise in a binary nuclear reaction
    d+3Н -> 4He+n. 
    In this reaction, the neutron and α-particle (4He nucleus) scatter almost in opposite directions. 
    Therefore, by registering the α-particle accompanying the neutron, it is possible to determine the direction of neutron emission (neutron tagging).

    Tagged neutrons, flying into the object of study, induce inelastic scattering reactions

    n+A –> n’+A*, A*–> γ+A, 

    as a result of which the excitation of the nucleus is removed by the emission of gamma rays with an energy spectrum specific for each chemical element.
